McCormick
Scientific, LLC generously sponsors this award.
For the past 28 years, Science Heritage Ltd, a private interest of Dr.
and Mrs. J. B. McCormick, has sponsored the annual NSH J.B. McCormick,
MD Award. This award is presented to a NSH member in recognition of outstanding
and exceptional service to the National Society for Histotechnology. The
winners are widely considered the “who’s who” of the
histotechnology society.
The award consists of a functioning and exact replica of the W. Roberston
of Edinburgh, c. 1750, Compound Screw-Barrel Microscope. In addition,
a boxed, eight-volume Science Heritage Library Collection set concerning
the history of the microscope and histotechnology. A searchable CD version
of the set is also available.
Selection of the recipient for this award is made by the Awards Committee
in consultation with Dr. McCormick. Depending on the quality and quantity
of nominees, the Awards Committee may or not confer this award on an annual
basis.
2005 marks the 60th anniversary of J.B. McCormick's first invention for
Histotechnology: the Bakelite Plastic Microscope Slide Box. The boxes
were for storage and shipping of slides that he prepared for sale to Universities
and Medical Schools under the brand name, Histoslide.
The Histoslide Company, formed while a student in Pre-Med at the University
of Notre Dame, was Dr. McCormick's first commercial venture.
The Histoslide was followed by 50 Patents, among which are; Tissue-Tek
cassettes, the first Hot/Cold Embedding Center; the Microtome Cryostat;
the Hematek Slide Staining System and, most recently, the TurbOflow and
MicrOflow Cassette System.
Today, J.B. McCormick is Chief Scientific Officer
of a newly formed entity named McCormick Scientific Company. Through this
initiative, he hopes to continue with the tradition of innovative ideas
and tools for the histotechnology profession. This web site is dedicated
to honoring the great individuals that have contributed so much to the
society.
